Workers of collapsed banks to get financial relief before Christmas  – Ken Ofori Atta

Workers of the banks that have suffered insolvency and had their license revoked will breathe a sigh of relief as they have been promised of some financial booty before the end of the year.

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, announced that government is considering giving out some financial relief to these workers who are believe to be more than five thousand.

Speaking in an interview with Kwame Safa Kayi on Accra based Peace FM, Ken Ofori Atta said the crises is worrisome particularly when the regulator is silence in its enforcement. What it means is that depositor’s monies are in danger.

It is established that 1.5 million depositors have been affected and whose deposits amounting to Ghc 9 billion crashed. According to him, these monies have gone into people’s pocket.

The minister attributed the wrong doing to their main opponent, the NDC; saying they had issued out certificates to these banks in rush and absurd manner.

According to him, even though some are assisting in investigation government is still working to give financial cushion to the innocent workers as we approach the Christmas.

Meanwhile, he assured that all monies that have been lost and stolen will be retrieved at all cost while those found culpable will face the full arm of the law.

As part of strengthening the banking system, Bank of Ghana has directed that all banks should by December 31, meet the new capital requirement.

The minister explained that the amount needed to meet this requirement is another US$ 400 million on the balance sheets of the banks for lending.
