UK Prime Minister wants Ghana to  respect gay rights

UK Prime Minister, Theresa May, wants Ghana and other Commonwealth nations to respect the right of gays.

According to May, the UK is ready to help African countries to reform their laws to promote the rights of gays and lesbians.

Theresa May was addressing African leaders attending the Commonwealth heads of government meeting in London.

The UK Prime Minister said there was so much to be done even though some member countries have decriminalized homosexuality.

“…yet there remains much to do…Nobody should face discrimination and persecution because of who they are or who they love. The UK stands ready to support any Commonwealth nation wanting to reform outdated legislation that makes such discrimination possible,” she said.

“I think it is important that gay [and lesbian] rights are discussed. To us, gay rights are human rights. Everybody should have the same rights. We have been through this discussion in our country, initially, there was a lot of resistance from religion. I fully recognize the debate which is going on here in Ghana. But I think it is very important to understand that all people have rights,” despite their sexuality and nationality”.

Many Ghanaians have kicked against gay rights, saying the practice violates both religious and traditional beliefs. Several religions have warned successive governments not to dare pass laws to legalize the ‘evil’ practice.

The latest call by Theresa May will definitely be shot down by  anti-gay campaigners in the country.
