Rawlings wanted me to pull down 4-star hotel- Ahwoi reveals

Professor Kwamena Ahwoi has revealed  that his boss, President Jerry  Rawlings asked him to order the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to pull down a four-star hotel allegedly constructed on a waterway .
The 5 million dollar hotel, which was pulled down at Airport Residential area in the late nineties belonged to businessman, Alhaji Yusif Ibrahim.
He revealed in page 137 of his controversial book, “Working With Rawlings” President Rawlings called me and asked me to order the AMA to pull down the hotel. I told him that it was inadvisable to pull down the hotel but that I would get the AMA to get the owner to do something about drainage to avert the feared flooding during heavy rains.
Read on:
“Alhaji Yusif Ibrahim  had built his hotel which had been rated a 4-star hotel in an area close to the Airport. The building had SUPPOSEDLY been built on a waterway. It was sited close to the private residence of Mr. Victor Gbeho,  the Minister of Foreign Affairs,  who had complained privately to me about the siting of the hotel and the fact that it was likely to cause flooding in the area during heavy rains.
I had explained to him that the hotel had been completed and furnished and that my checks revealed that all necessary approvals had been sought and obtained and that unless money could be found to pay compensation, it would result in great financial damages if it should be pulled down.
President Rawlings called me and asked me to order the AMA to pull down the hotel. I told him that it was inadvisable to pull down the hotel but that I would get the AMA to get the owner to do something about drainage to avert the feared flooding during heavy rains.
I woke up one morning to the news that the military had demolished the hotel. I had no evidence that the demolition was on the orders of President Rawlings,  but given the antecedents of the demolition, I had my suspicions”.
