Parliament approves US ‘military base’ deal as NDC MPs walk out

A walkout by the Minority in Parliament failed to prevent the controversial Ghana- US Defence cooperation agreement from being  ratified.

After a day full of drama, Parliament without the Minority, approved the controversial agreement  Friday night  after being okayed by the Committee on Defence.

“This House adopts the report from the joint committee on defense and interior,” the Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye said.

The government is likely to face a series of protests in the coming days as  the deal is not popular among  many Ghanaians.

Under the agreement, the government will allow the US military unrestrained access to some facilities close to the Kotoka International Airport.

The facilities will be a base where military equipment will be stored for exclusive use by the US military.
