“I don't want to be a President elected by deceit” – Akufo-Addo tells EC

The President of  the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct a free and fair election, adding that he does not want to be President elected by deceit.

Akufo-Addo made the comments after filing his nomination to contest and seek a re-election in the presidential polls on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday 7th October 2020 at the EC headquarters in Accra.

The EC opened for the filling of nomination forms by presidential and parliamentary aspirants who have downloaded and have completed all the necessary paper works to submit the forms at the commissions’ office on Monday 5th October.

After the EC’s announcement, the Presidentoe Republic of Ghana  Akufo-Addo, two others, an and his Vice Presidnet Dr, Mahamudu Bawumia on Tuesday stormed the EC office to file their nomination.

On the same day, Independent presidential aspirant, Mr Alfred Kwame Asiedu Walker, and the flag bearer of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Rev. Christian Kwabena Andrew also filed their nomination forms.

After a successful submission of forms, President Akufo Addo told the EC that they are the referees in the upcoming polls and that the onus lies on them to conduct an election free of deceit and crooked results.

“Elections are not meant to be decided by you, or the officials that work here. You are the referees of the contest… I am not interested in any crooked results and I do not want to be a President elected by deceit. In you [ EC] and the leadership of our country, there are people who are committed to a free, fair, credible and transparent process. We hope that will mark the conduct of the elections on December 7,” he said.
