The Custom Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority has received 15 pickups and some security dogs from the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) as part of cooperation between Ghana and Denmark to fight illicit drugs and crimes.
The delivery of the vehicles forms part of the package earmarked for the Custom Division under the Tax and Development Programme between the two countries since 2015, spearheaded by DANIDA
The Tax and Development Programme was designed with the aim of improving the sustainability of Government of Ghana public finances – leading to Ghana becoming a self-reliant as well as increasing commercial relations. Present at the handing over ceremony were the Commissioner-General of GRA, Emmanuel Kofi Nti; Commissioner- Custom Division, Isaac Crentsil; Deputy Ambassador of the Danish Embassy, Peter E. Olessen amongst others.
Commissioner-General of GRA, Mr. Emmanuel Kofi Nti who received the vehicles including the nine wild security dogs lauded the initiative from DANIDA and also remarked that their operations in revenue mobilization will further be enhanced whilst at the same time protect the nation against infiltration of prohibited goods. DANIDA will in the next six months hand over to the Custom Division six saloon cars. They will also put up a training and teaching center at the Custom' Agortime-Kpetoi station in the Volta Region.
The Deputy Danish Ambassador, Peter E. Olessen in his handing over speech, stressed the need for improving the performance of GRA since it is critical to the economic and social development of Ghana, especially in the transition from Aid to Trade.
Also, their support stems from the quest for Ghana to strengthen revenue administration in order to make up for the possible shortfalls in donor inflows when development partners exit.
Meanwhile, Commissioner-Custom Division, Isaac Crentsil who mentioned the enormous support including technical assistance given, opined that the 15 pick-up would assist their preventive operations particularly at some leading stations for effective patrols. He further expressed his gratitude for the establishment of a security dog academy called K.9 Unit by DANIDA for rummaging of vehicles, identifying contraband goods on persons, packages and general patrol duties.
