Deputy Chairman for the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Samuel Akumoah, says the commission's report on the menace of political vigilantism has identified Body building groups as causative agents.

President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo hinted a ‘voluntary disbandment’ deliberation on vigilante groups between the two major political parties, NPP and NDC while addressing the general public at the State of the Nation Address in Parliament in February.

President Akufo Addo noted that if the voluntary disbandment by the parties appear not feasible, he will initiate legislation on the matter.

This followed the tensions during the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency by-election where the government was accused of engaging in state-sponsored political violence.

The NCCE in a report on its engagements with political parties and other stakeholders on the menace of political party vigilantism has made recommendations on some key issued which needs to be addressed in order to eradicate political vigilantism in Ghana.

He noted that these political vigilante group recruits these men in the various body building associations in Ghana into their vigilante groups.

“Per our report, some of these vigilante groups own guns and ammunitions, how do we get those ammunitions after they have been disbanded?”, he quizzed.

Succeeding the directive from the President, the two leading political parties in Ghana, New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) met on Tuesday and signed a memorandum of understanding to disband these groups.
