Thursday’s massive protest at Adenta has yielded some positive results as government has given an indication that works on the footbridges will begin as early as next week.
“Work on the uncompleted bridges is expected to commence within a week. Work is to be done on an accelerated basis with multiple contractors to ensure quick competition. This is in accordance with already commenced processes prior to the unfortunate incident that occurred on Thursday,” the government said in a statement.
“The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) is to intensify its education and sensitization programs targeting drivers and pedestrians along the corridor,” it added.
Another death on the Madina-Adenta six-lane highway sparked massive protest as residents blocked roads Thursday.
The angry residents burnt car tyres and also clashed with police, resulting in a heavy traffic on the road.
Several deaths have been recorded on the road in recent times due to the absence of a footbridge for pedestrians.
The depressing development has sparked a social media campaign for the construction of a footbridge.
Government spokespersons have explained that it would take a while for the footbridge to be completed due to procurement processes.
