Women are catalyst for development – Prof. Emeritus Oti Boateng

Commissioner on the United Nations International Civil Service Commission and Omanhene of New Juaben Traditional Area, Professor Emeritus Oti Boateng, has stated that every country’s development is premised on how it empowers and develops its women.

According to the Commissioner, women empowerment and development cannot be relegated to the background if a country wants to develop. Describing women as catalyst for development, he called on the leadership of all countries to consider women as an essential part of their human capital.

He made the statements during an interview with Atinka FM’s Regina Asamoah at the United Nations Headquarters, New York.
Professor Emeritus Oti Boateng is at the UN attending the 86th meeting of the United Nations International Civil Service Commission which is running concurrently with this year’s sixty-second session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.

Making reference to his article published in an International Journal of Gender and Women’s Studies captioned, “Ensuring The Central Role of Women in Development,” the Commissioner who is also a gender activist, noted the need to ensure the central role of women in the global economy and the development process has long been recognized. Yet, women tend to be poorer than men globally while many women continue to suffer deprivation in terms of health, education, economic participation and basic freedom.

In his article, he acknowledges that the goal of ensuring the central role of women in development can be achieved where women and men participate in the development process as equal partners to create a lifelong and transformative society in which both genders can flourish.

Daasebre Prof. Emeritus Oti Boateng is currently working on “volume three” of his book ‘Development in Unity: Compendium of Works of Daasebre Prof. (Emeritus) Oti Boateng’ and he hopes to publish it by December 2018.

In May 2016, the New York State University honoured him as a 21st Century role model for his outstanding accomplishments.
