Voter ID: Registering foreigners will have dire effects on economy- GUTA

President for the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Dr. Joseph Obeng, says registration of foreigners in the ongoing voter registration exercise will have dire consequences on the Ghanaian economy.
This comment by GUTA comes after reports on the registration of foreign nationals especially in the border towns went viral on social media.
The NDC has accused the ruling NPP for suppressing members of their party from taking part in the ongoing voter registration exercise.
Former President Mahama in a Facebook post accused the Akufo-Addo led government of using the military and party thugs to stop people from exercising their right to register and vote in the upcoming December polls.
He accused government of using executive powers to stir up tribal discrimination.
Reacting to claims by the former President, Minister for Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, denied the claims, adding NPP is not using power to suppress electorates with the help of the military.
He explained that government has not conceived any plan of denying eligible Ghanaians and that they are challenging the former NDC rubbishes to present evidence to that effect if there is any.
Speaking on Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Dr. Joseph Obeng, cautioned politicians to desist from plans to allow non-Ghanaians to register.
Dr. Joseph Obeng recounted how a foreign trader showed GUTA task force a Voter ID card and a National Health Insurance card which had their names on it.
“ If we do not take care all these people will subsequently enroll their kids in our schools and enjoy the fruit of our labour. The ID Card can also be used as proof to apply for a Ghanaian passport. GUTA had an encounter with a trader who had a voter ID card” he noted.
