Some time ago in Ghana, children used to make toy cars with used items including tins of canned foods and bamboo. It was fun and more importantly educative, bringing out the creativity innovative ability in them.
Although the world has evolved through technology, one could hardly find the ‘Ghanaian child’ displaying such talent and creativity through this act of playing.
Ghana, just like any other country is bedeviled with numerous challenges which require solutions. This provides an equal opportunity for people with great thinking ability to create something which will make a difference.
If Ghana could boast of inventors, problem solvers, and creators in future, authorities, including the Ghana Education Service, school Heads, and Teachers as well as parents would have to imbibe creative thinking ability in children right from basic school.
To help educate, train school teachers and children, by equipping them with knowledge in design, construction, amongst others, Strawbees, a Swedish Educational Company has been in the country to embark on some innovative projects.
The project is being been piloted in some selected schools. The first was held at the Kids Vision Academy where pupils were given a taste of what is called creativity and innovation.
With basic waste material such as the kalypo drink, water bottles, and straw, the children, as well as teachers of the Kids Vision Academy, had an amazing experience of their lives. They were able to create various designs and shapes which at the end will make learning easy, interesting and more importantly, participatory.
According to the founder, Strawbees, Eric Thorstenssion, the team is excited about supporting Ghana, ensuring, that children get the best education in technology which will enable them to compete globally. The project focuses more on problem-solving aspects in various spheres of life
The Headmistress, Kids Vision Academy, Rev. Yvette Kyerematen lauded “Team Strawbees” for bringing such innovation to their doorsteps.
She expressed excitement over the project and was hopeful the first hands-on training and experience given to about 111 pupils currently in the school, will go a long way to benefit them greatly.
