UTAG-UG to meet over Gyampo, Butakor sanction

President of the University of Ghana (UG) chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Dr. Samuel Nkumban, says the Association is set to meet over the sanction the Disciplinary Committee of the University of Ghana placed on Gyampo and Butakor.
Prof. Ransford Gyampo and Dr. Paul Butakor have been suspended for six and four months respectively without salary for their involvement in the BBC sex for grade documentary.
This University of Ghana disciplinary Committee completed investigations into the BBC’s Sex for Grades documentary.
The Management of the University of Ghana in a statement noted that the Senior Members’ Disciplinary Committee has completed the hearing of the matter involving Professor Ransford Gyampo and Dr. Paul Butakor.
It added that in line with statute 46 (2) of the University of Ghana Statutes, as amended, and regulation 15.0 of the Code of Conduct for Academic Staff of the University of Ghana, the Disciplinary Committee recommended a six-month suspension without pay for Professor Gyampo and a four-month suspension without pay for Dr. Butakor effective January 1, 2020.
“In addition, Prof. Gyampo and Dr. Butakor are required to undergo appropriate training on the University of Ghana’s Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Policy as well as the Code of Conduct for Academic Staff of the University of Ghana. They will be required to receive a positive assessment after the training before resumption of their duties. They are also required to undergo annual assessment for a period of 5 years,” the statement added.
Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, President of the University of Ghana (UG) chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Dr. Samuel Nkumban, stated that the difficulty the Association has is the fact that the committee failed to establish the fact that Professor Gyampo and Dr. Butakor engaged in “Sex for grades” as BBC sought to portray in the documentary.
“The executive committee of the association will meet by close of today and seek interpretations of the development from other statutory bodies like the Labour commission”, he said.
