Used auto part dealers threaten to eject foreign retailers

The Chairman for the Used Auto Parts Dealer’s Association, Siaw Ampadu, says the association would be left with no option than to apply force to eject foreigners from the retail market.

He made this statement after the government’s decision to suspend its initial directive to stop foreigners from engaging in retail business in Ghana.

Per the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) law, section 27 (1) of the GIPC act, “a person who is not a citizen or an enterprise which is not wholly owned by a citizen shall not invest or participate in the sale of goods or provision of services in a market, petty trading or hawking or selling of goods in a stall at any place”.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Chairman of the used Auto parts dealer’s association, Siaw Ampadu mentioned that they will apply the same force used by Nigerians to eject the Chinese from their retail market should the government fail to lift the suspension.

According to him, he is saddened by the fact that some Members of parliament who were once spare parts dealers have turned blind eyes to the association in such trying times.

“Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has a spare parts store in Kumasi, but he has turned a blind eye to the whole retail feud, which is bad”, He fumed.

The leader of the Nigerian Traders Group in Ghana, Yahaya Alhassan has however pleaded with the government to keep them in the Ghanaian retail market.

He also promised to ensure that his people pay taxes to the government of Ghana.
