UEW unrest: School closed down, students asked to vacate campus

The University of Education, Winneba Campus has been shut down following agitations by some students to reinstate some lecturers whose appointment have been terminated by the University’s Governing Council.

The students are also calling for the dismissal of the Vice Chancellor of UEW, Rev. Prof. Afful-Broni.

Atinka FM’s Central Regional Correspondent, Agyei Kwaku Mensah, who reported from the school indicated that a fresh protest sparked Thursday morning although the students had staged a demonstration on Tuesday.

The students ,Thursday morning, blocked some principal streets on campus with stones and tables, and destroyed school properties including vehicles.

The police reportedly fired a number of warning shots in an attempt to calm the situation and scatter the students who were demostrating. The School's notice board as well as the windscreen of the School's SRC bus have been destroyed.

Unconfirmed reports also suggests that a 5-year old child has died  after inhaling  tear gas fired by the police.
