UEW Governing Council’s press conference dead on arrival – Sacked UTAG Prez

Sacked President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), at University of Education, Winneba (UEW) branch, Dr. Frimpong Kwaku Duku says the press conference to address the current crisis at the University was needless.

Some Senior staff members of UEW were dismissed by the Vice-Chancellor. These Lecturers included the local University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) president, Dr. Frimpong Kakyire Duku and Dr. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, a senior lecturer.

According to the governing council of the University, Dr. Duku was dismissed on the basis that he did not use the internal structures of the University to settle his displeasure before seeking redress in court.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka am Drive, Dr. Frimpong Kwaku Duku stated that the press conference organized by the governing council of the University did not address the demands stipulated by the students of UEW.

The student called for the reinstatement of the sacked lecturers as well as the dismissal of the Vice Chancellor of UEW, Rev. Prof. Afful-Broni.

According to Dr. Duku, the press conference did not address any issues hence there was no need to have called the press conference in the first place.

The University Council in press conference asked the lecturers who have been sacked to petition the council if they were not treated fairly. Dr. Frimpong Kwaku Duku described this move as a means of victimizing the sacked lecturers and workers of the University.

The University of Education, Winneba Campus has since been shut down following series of demonstrations by some students to reinstate some lecturers whose appointment have been terminated by the University’s Governing Council.

One of the lecturers whose appointment has been terminated by the Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba, has however appealed the council’s decision.
