Two Chinese companies donate $200,000 to Ghana to fight covid-19

Chinese Ambassador to Ghana H.E. Shi Ting WANG, on behalf of two Chinese invested companies, has donated 200,000 USD to the Ghanaian government toward its fight against COVID-19.

The two Chinese invested companies, which are Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Ltd and Africa World Airlines Ltd (AWA),donated the money through the Chinese Embassy on Sunday at a brief ceremony in Accra.

The Chief of Staff, Madam Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, received the donation for the Ghanaian government at the Jubilee House.

Presenting the money, H.E. Wang said “We are very concerned about the COVID-19 spread in Ghana. To help Ghana in its fight against COVID-19, two Chinese-invested companies, Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Ltd and Africa World Airlines Ltd, have offered to donate 100,000 US dollars each to the government of Ghana.

“At such a critical time, I am very grateful that you attend this important ceremony and express our solidarity and resolve to win the battle against COVID-19,” he added.

The Chinese Ambassador expressed appreciation to the two companies and as well offered a special appreciation to Togbe Afede XIV, President of the National House of Chiefs, who is a “co-founder of the two companies and a good friend of China.”

Making clarification on the covid-19 outbreak across the globe, H.E. Wang emphasised that even though the virus spread massively in china in December last year, “let me be clear, that does not mean the origin is in China.”

“Under President Xi Jinping’s leadership, the whole nation has been fighting an all-out people’s war against the epidemic. So far, we have made important progress in our prevention and control efforts. In the nation of 1.4 billion people, the number of new confirmed home grown cases has become nearly zero,” he touted.

He praised the Ghana government for its pragmatic steps taken to tackle the covid-19 in the country, stressing that “the government of Ghana has done a commendable job.”

H.E. Wang expressed his full support to Ghana’s decision to impose restrictions in some selected areas for two weeks and expressed the belief that Ghana would weather the storm.

“Virus has no boundaries. There is only one earth, we are the community with shared future, we are a big family. Though hard hit itself, China will do its utmost to aid Ghana to deal with the spread of COVID-19.

“Last week, with the assistance of the Chinese Embassy, Ghana took delivery of its consignment of PPEs and test kits donated by Jack Ma Foundation. In addition to Sunon Agosli and AWA, the other Chinese companies in Ghana, facilitated by Chinese Embassy, are also expressing their willing to make donations to Ghana.

“And what’s more, the aid from Chinese government is on its way as well. Hon. Chief of Staff and dear friends, I would like to assure you, that more supports is coming from China to Ghana,” the Chinese Ambassador pledged.
