Tema: Commercial drivers inhaling petrol, brake fluid to boost energy

The Tema Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Owusu Bempah, has expressed concern over the abuse of petrol and brake fluid by commercial drivers as an energy booster.
Speaking in an interview with Atinka TV, ACP Bempah said the abuse of drug substances by most commercial drivers, has been a major contributing factor to most  accidents  on our roads.
With statistics showing a sharp rise in road accidents in the Tema Region for the year 2019, concerns about the cause of most accidents has been a major worry to the public.
In 2019, accident cases involving commercial drivers, skyrocketed to 608 as against 358 in 2018, a very disturbing figure.
In an interview with Atinka Tv’s Philip Azu, the Tema Regional MTTD commander, ACP Owusu Bempah attributed the rise in accidents involving commercial vehicles, to the abuse of drug substances by these drivers.
According to ACP Bempa, the era of tramadol intake and glue sniffing by drivers to enhance their ability in driving for long hours, has been taken over by the abuse of petrol and brake fluid by some of these drivers, who mostly pour the petrol and brake fluid into their dusters and sniff them.
However, some ‘short distance’  commercial drivers Atinka TV spoke to on the latest discovery, could not confirm or deny the use of petrol and brake fluid as an enhancer, but were very critical of the operations of the various institutions mandated to curtail these practices.
