Support women in politics – Local Gov't Minister tells Ghanaians

The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama, has expressed disappointment over lack of women representation among the newly elected Assembly Members of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly.
She was addressing the media at the Tamale Metro Assembly Complex after the inauguration of the newly elected assembly members.
Answering questions on the election of women into the assembly and the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill, Hajia Alima Mahama said the Bill is at the Cabinet-level and will soon be presented to Parliament.
She explained that Affirmative Action Bill is currently going through some discussions with various stakeholders.
She was surprised that no female was among the 41 elected assembly members.
Hajia Alima Mahama used the opportunity to call on organizations and individuals to support women to get involved in modern politics.
She said women can also occupy public positions and that men should encourage them in the electoral areas.
