Deputy Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Bright Wireko-Brobby, has pleaded with the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association(GRNMA) and its allied association-Physician Assistants and Certified Registered Anaethetists to reconsider its decision to embark on a strike action.
The appeal follows the decision of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association(GRNMA) and its allied association-Physician Assistants and Certified Registered Anaethetists to embark on a strike action on Monday, 21st September,2020 if the government fails to address issues that have to do with their conditions of services.
“GRNMA National Council in collaboration with its Allied Associations has discussed fully the report of the GRNMA/Allied negotiation team on the proposal of the Employment and has concluded the following adding that, the proposal as reported cannot serve the economic interest of All Nurses, Midwives, PAs and CRAs” President of the Association, Perpetual Ofosu-Ampofo said at press conference Thursday 18th September 2020.
Speaking to the issue on Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Bright Wireko-Brobby said the country is not in normal times and that the commission is doing everything humanly possible to address the concerns of the GRNMA.
“I will appeal to the leadership of the unions that, although they have legitimate concerns, we are not in normal times. We all know covid-19 pandemic has done to world economies. That notwithstanding, we are not hiding behind the covid to avoid their pleas. I assure them that we are doing everything humanly possible to address their concerns,” he added.
Bright Wireko-Brobby explained that the matter of conditions of service and salaries of the association is an inter-ministerial duty and that it takes some time for the issues to be addressed.
He said government is set to meet the leadership of the association, a decision that shows the seriousness the Akufo-Addo led government attaches to the health sector.
