Stop polluting water bodies to enable access to fresh water for all- Ama Kudom

A Member of the planning committee for the 2019 World Water Day, Ms Mary Ama Kudom Agyemang, has appealed to all Ghanaians to shun activities that pollute water bodies in the country.

That, she said will enable all Ghanaians have access to fresh and clean water.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s flagship morning show, Ghana Nie, Ms Kudom observed that negative human activities was factor that prevented most Ghanaians, especially those in the rural areas from getting access to fresh water.

According to her, some people put feces in polythene bags and dump it water, a situation that contaminates it and make it unsafe for consumption.

She also observed that some farmers farmed at river banks and exposed chemicals such as fertilizers to the water.

Citing another example of activities that contaminates water, Ms Kudom pointed illegal mining activities, as one of the leading factors that prevented all Ghanaians from having access to clean water.

Meanwhile, she educated Ghanaians that having access to water was not the responsibility of the Ghana Water Company only, but the responsibility of all Ghanaians.

“The issue of water is not limited to one body. Most of the times people think it is the responsibility of one person to provide access to clean water, but that is not the issue. We are all responsible. If you contaminate the water bodies it affects all of us,” she said.

“Stop activities that destroys water. Stop farming at river banks. Stop polluting water with fertilizer. We are pleading with those mining at Atiwa, the Weija water descends from Atiwa and all of us will be affected,” she added.

To commemorate the World Water Day on March 22, Ms Kudom, however, stated that the Water Resource Commission will advocate for access to water for all Ghanaians.

“We are looking at putting in place measures to enable PWDs to also have access to water and Sanitation without any challenge,” she said.
