Private schools welcome GES directive on licensed teachers, calls for stakeholder meetings

The Ghana National Association of Private Schools has lauded the Ghana Education Service (GES) on its ‘licensed teachers’ directive but has called for more stakeholder engagements.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed all Private schools in the country to start employing the services of licensed and qualified teachers like what pertains in the public schools. This, according to the GES, is to ensure uniformed standards in both public and private schools.

GES has stated that it will not grant accreditation to any proprietor who will employs the services of unlicensed teachers.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, President for the Ghana National Association of Private Schools, Eric Appiah mentioned that the GES has excluded the association from its stakeholder meetings despite its tremendous contribution to Ghana’s education sector.

He noted that the Government cannot handle the educational sector without support from private hands hence a private education sector clause in the constitution.

According to him, the association has about 360 schools across the country and deserves inclusions in meetings concerning the educational sector.

He disputed reports that the private schools engage the services of unqualified teachers in their schools.

“I can tell for a fact that without the private schools, most districts would have scored zero in the BECE results., where is the survey that was used to determine this statement? an isolated case or cases should not be used as a basis for generalization,” he stated.

Commenting on the double track policy, Eric Appiah mentioned that the government ignored the Private Secondary Schools’ despite pleas from the Association.

He, however, noted that the Ghana National Association of Private Schools is ready to work with the government with respect to the double track policy.
