Newmont: Protesters, police in deadly clash over compensation at New Abirem

Some residents of  New Abirem in the Eastern Region on Tuesday clashed with police over alleged nonpayment of compensation.

Scores of residents mostly farmers got injured in the deadly clash.

According to our Eastern Regional correspondent, Olivia Yeboah, the residents hit the streets of Abirem to protest the nonpayment of compensation for lands used by Newmont Ghana Limited.

However, the peaceful protest turned bloody when the police fired tear gas into the crowd, injuring about 5 protesters.

The Assemblyman for the area, Francis Offin, slammed the police for using maximum force against the peaceful protesters.
.
"We notified the police as the Public Order Act demands, so why the needless aggression from the police,” the angry assemblyman questioned.

“None of us (protesters) was holding a gun or a weapon and if the police officers will take the law into their own hands and brutalize us then, we will also advise ourselves accordingly,” he further warned.

Newmont has not officially commented on the matter.
