New Voters' Register: Disregard photos showing overcrowded registration centres-EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has urged the public to disregard photos depicting over crowded registration centres.
According to the EC, in a press statement, its attention has been drawn to a photograph making rounds on social media purporting to be a scene at a Registration Centre.
The photograph, the EC said does not show the usual Registration Centre set up that characterises all EC’s Registration Centres, adding that it just shows a large crowd gathered together in an area.
Again, the EC stated that the originator of the photograph did not indicate the Registration Centre where the photograph was taken, saying that this is not a Registration Centre of the EC and therefore the public should disregard it.
“All in all reports reaching the Commission depict a positive turnout at all the Registration Centres. The Commission is aware that some Centres recorded high numbers leading to some overcrowding. We are taking steps to work with the Security Agencies to address possible overcrowding at our Registration Centres,” the EC noted.
However, it stated that its attention has also been drawn to an audio circulating on social media to the effect that Guarantors who guarantee for up to ten (10) people will be disenfranchised, adding that,”This is not true.”
The EC explained that the C.I. 126 expressly states that Guarantors can guarantee for up to ten (10) people and they will not be disenfranchised.
However, it stated clearly that any individual who guarantees for more than ten (10) persons will be picked up by its system and prosecuted.
“We call on the general public to be circumspect and disregard false information which is not rooted in our Laws and C.I. ‘s,” the EC cautioned.
