New register: NDC makes U-turn; agrees EC has power to compile new register

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is not challenging the Electoral Commission’s power to compile a new voters register.
It is has subsequently withdrawn it’s request challenging the EC’s power to compile a new register at the Supreme Court.
This development comes after the court told counsel that the rules of the court does not allow a party to seek a relief and also to be granted another relief in the alternative.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in March 2020 sent a request to the Supreme Court barring the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana from compiling a new voter register adding that it was also unconstitutional for the EC to reject an existing voters ID as a prerequisite for the upcoming voter registration exercise.
The NDC argued that it was unconstitutional for the EC to reject an existing voter ID as it would disenfranchise many Ghanaians which is a violation of Article 42 of the 1992 Constitution.
The case has been adjourned and will be recalled on Tuesday June 23rd 2020.
