New Covid-19 wave frightening – GMA

General Secretary for the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Justice Yankson, says the country needs swift  measures to help fight the virus considering the damage it is causing.

The statement by the medical doctor follows a surge in the covid-19 cases after the country was hit with the second wave.

The country has recorded a total of 3,613 active cases of the deadly coronavirus with 372 deaths as at Tuesday 26th January 2021.

Speaking to host of Atinka FM’s ‘AM Drive’ Ekourba Gyasi, General Secretary for the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Justice Yankson explained that although the President in his 22nd Covid-19 update address stated that the country records over 200 cases daily on the average, the number has multiplied with over 600 cases of the virus being recorded daily.

According to him, this development calls for immediate measures to help with the fight against the virus.

“The situation is dire and alarming! With the first wave, we were recording mild and asymptomatic cases, but the second wave is not like that. Almost all patients reporting to the health facilities are either severely or critically ill, unlike before and we are finding it difficult to admit them because our ICUs are almost full. It will be prudent for the masses to be cautious and continue to adhere to the preventive measures,” he added.

He reiterated that Ghana runs a greater risk of recording mass cases if people still continue to disregard adherence to the safety protocols to help fight covid-19.

He also called on the government to enhance  the laid down Covid-19 safety protocols  as  quite a number of people have stopped adhering to the safety precautions disregarding the fact that the virus is still in the country.
