Netherlands Ambassador hails Ghana over sanitation fight

The Netherlands Ambassador to Ghana, Ron Strikker has expressed great satisfaction at the commitment shown by the Ghanaian government and civil society organizations (CSOs) to improving water and sanitation conditions in the country over the past five years.

He said the commitment, professionalism and the level of energy injected into activities had yielded great results in the sector.

Mr. Strikker made the remarks in Accra on Friday at the end-of-pogramme assessment conference for Watershed Ghana project which was undertaken over the past five years towards improving WASH and sustainable Water Resources Management (WRM) in the country.

He commended the government for establishing the Ministry Of Sanitation and Water Resources and other authorities responsible for water and sanitation, adding, “It is a good start as a country to work to improve WASH/IWRM governance and management.”

The ambassador entreated stakeholders to be focused and do more in the sector because WASH/IWRM is part of the SDGs 6 which has ten more years to elapse.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of Water Resources Commission of Ghana, Ben Ampomah called for collaboration among all stakeholders to sustain water and sanitation awareness even as the Watershed Ghana project officially ends.

He also urged the stakeholders to share the outcomes of their work with the respective institutions in the sector, especially those at the local level to incorporate them in their work plans for proper implementation.

On her part, the Country Director of IRC Ghana, Vida Duti indicated that IRC’s goal in the partnership project was to support CSOs with the capacity to generate the evidence to support their engagements with the government and the local people.

She stressed that there were still other critical issues to address in the sector even though some progress has been made.

In his address, the Chairman of the Coalition of NGOs in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS), called on the stakeholders to sustain the gains and push watershed activities to a level where all the institutions would be active to promote the sector.
