National Cathedral not Ghana’s top most priority – TUC

The Deputy General Secretary of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) says the government’s decision to construct a National Cathedral is flawed adding that the Cathedral is not a priority at the moment.

President Nana Akufo-Addo on Monday, March 6, 2017, cut the sword for the construction of a national cathedral for interdenominational worship in Accra.
Former Lands and Natural Resources Minister, John Peter Amewu, speaking to the media after the sod cutting, stated that the Scholarship Secretariat, Passport Office at Ridge, some nine bungalows occupied by Appeals Court Judges as well as other structures will be demolished to make way for the construction of the 5000 seater National Cathedral.

However, speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Joshua Ansah asked the government to concentrate on other pressing needs of Ghanaians which exclude a cathedral.

He noted that although the TUC will continue to support government initiatives that seek to address the social and economic challenges facing our country such as the President’s vision of Ghana Beyond Aid, the free SHS programme, the National Builders Corp programme, and similar progressive projects, the TUC cannot support the construction of a national cathedral.

“We believe the Good Lord will not approve this project, given the social and economic challenges facing Ghana today,” he noted.

Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has criticized the government on its decision to demolish the Passport Office at Ridge, the Scholarship Secretariat, and bungalows occupied by some Appeals Court Judges, to make way for the construction of a national Cathedral.

He expressed his disappointment in the NPP government in its quest to build a National Cathedral close to the State House at all cost despite mounting opposition.
