Murder of law professor: Second suspect also ill; misses court

Another suspect has been arraigned at the Kaneshie District Court in connection with the death of the University of Ghana law lecturer, Professor Yaw Benneh.

The suspect, Ebenezer Kwayisi alias Junior, was arraigned at the Kaneshie District Court Monday morning [October 26, 2020] by the prosecution in the case.

He becomes the third suspect to be arraigned in court in addition to the lead suspect James Nana Womba and Opambour Agya Badu Nkansah.

Unfortunately the lead suspect, James Nana Womba, who according to the police confessed killing Prof Benneh has died.

He died whilst in police custody on October 17, 2020.

According to the police, he suddenly fell ill whilst in custody and was rushed to the police hospital where he died.

The court is yet to receive the post mortem examination report on Womba, to know what actually killed him.

Professor Emmanuel Yaw Benneh, was found dead at his residence at Adjiriganor in Accra.

The body of the law lecturer, a younger brother of a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. George Benneh, was discovered in his residence on Saturday, September 12, 2020 lying in a pool of blood, with his hands tied behind him and his body bearing cuts all over.

Police investigations has pointed to killing following which the police said Womba confessed being the one who killed him.

During initial investigations some other suspects were picked up but were all released later leaving Womba and Badu Nkansah alone to stand trial.

Latest suspect

When the latest suspect, Ebenezer Kwayisi was arraigned Monday morning at the Kaneshie District Court presided over by Ms Ama Adomako Kwakye, he was slapped with the charge of murder and abetment of crime.

His plea was however not taken reports Graphic Online’s Justice Agbenorsi.

This is because the charges and facts were not read in court.

The prosecutor in the case, Inspector Ebenezer Teye-Okuffo told the court that the post-mortem examination on James Nana Womba was being conducted by Chief Superintendent Dr Owusu Afriyie of the Police Hospital in Accra.

At the hearing Monday, the second suspect in the case Opambour Agya Badu Nkansah was absent.

The prosecutor told the court that the second suspect in the case, Nkansah was also indisposed and was receiving treatment at the Police Hospital.

Inspector Teye-Okuffo prayed the court to adjourn the case to enable the prosecution to consolidate the charges in the case.

The case has been adjourned to November 9, 2020 to enable Nkansah to recuperate in order to consolidate the charge sheet.
