MTN Heroes of Change Season 5 TV series is celebrating the efforts of Justin Kantavooro Yelevielbayire, a biogas engineer from Wa in the Upper West region.

Justin’s bid to find solutions to Ghana’s waste management crisis led to the invention of a reactor which turns plastic waste to fuel. The plastic waste is collected and brought to the recycling center where they are then put into the reactor. The rector then uses a process called pyrolysis to transform the waste into fuel for homes.

According to him, he was motivated to embark on the project because plastic waste has been recorded to be the major cause of flooding in Ghana and government spends so much money to recycle plastic waste.  He employs about 150 people from his community who collects plastic waste for recycling. Justin hopes to build three 25 ton plants in the Northern, Middle belt and Southern part of Ghana to recycle more plastic waste.

Commenting on the project, a Waste Management Officer of the Wa Municipal Assembly Mr. Francis Yelyen said “This young man has come out with an invention to solve our plastic waste problems in the country. For us in Wa Municipality, the project is saving us the cost of transporting plastic waste to Tamale or Kumasi for recycling.

More importantly, the project is creating a lot of jobs for the youth and women in our community.”

Justin is one of the 10 finalists of the MTN Heroes of Change Season 5. He was nominated by Confidence Koblar Adediah who believes the innovation has the potential of addressing Ghana’s plastic waste problems.
