Minority’s rants over ¢280.3 million CAP Fund ‘much ado about nothing’ -MP

Member of Parliament (MP) for Bantama Constituency and government spokesperson on finance, Daniel Okyem Aboagye, says the breakdown of expenditure for some ¢280.3 million which is part of the Coronavirus Alleviation Programme (CAP) will definitely be made public.
This statement from the lawmaker comes after the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) called on the Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo to conduct a special audit into the expenditure of some ¢280.3 million spent on relief items during the lockdown period.
According to the Minority, government has failed to provide the nation with how the funds were utilized almost a month after the lockdown was lifted.
“This is particularly so, as we have sighted media reports of state-sponsored COVID relief items meant for the vulnerable, being sold in the market by functionaries of the ruling New Patriotic Party in Kumasi and other parts of the country.
“Indeed, we have in our possession, an audio recording from Kumasi based Silva FM, in which Market women at Tafo Pankrono have confirmed that eggs meant for the vulnerable under the CAP have been diverted and sold on the market by persons associated with certain government functionaries in the area,” The Ranking Member of the Finance Committee of Parliament, Casiel Ator Forson said while addressing the media.
Speaking on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Ekourba Gyasi, MP for Bantama Constituency and government spokesperson on finance, Daniel Okyem Aboagye said the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) feels irritated by the President’s effective way of dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic hence the rants.
He said the Akufo-Addo led administration is still dealing with the impact of the covid-19 and that the expenditure for the money will definitely be made during the mid-year review.
“If you want to call for a special audit, is not out of place. But I think the NDC is rushing looking at how they are going about it. Why don’t you table a question in Parliament and ask the minister in Charge how the monies were spent. It’s a much ado about nothing situation”, he said.
