Michigan Aerospace writes to Akufo-Addo, exposes Health Minister over ‘free’ drones

The Michigan Aerospace Manufacturers Association Humanitarian Emergency Logistics Program (MAMA-HELP) has written to President Nana Akufo –Addo to “provide clarification” on its recent engagement with the Health Ministry over a proposed delivery of some vital medical supplies and equipment to the country at the no cost.

During Wednesday’s  media encounter   at the Jubilee House,  Mr. Bismark Brown, host of Atinka TV’s ”Ghana Nie”, enquired  from President Akufo-Addo if he  was aware that the Health Ministry had approached the Michigan Aerospace Manufacturers Association (MAMA)  in the USA to assist Ghana by building 10 regional emergency  with ambulance each, provide the country with two helicopters for medical supplies all together with unmanned humanitarian vehicles  (drones) for the supply of vaccines and samples in case of an outbreak.

Mr. Brown backed his question with a 2015 Ministry Health report prepared by Dr. Afisah Zachariah, who was Director of Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation at the Ministry at the time.

However, President Akufo-Addo denied knowledge of the existence of such a report when the question was posed to him but the Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman Manu, claimed that the move was aborted because members of the MAMA-HELP delegation were not credible.

However, MAMA-HELP in a response to the President barely 24 hours after his media encounter, confirmed that it had plans to offer free medical facilities and medical equipment including drones to the country but the proposal never materialized because “in a letter dated January 31, 2018, from the Honorable Kwaku Agyeman-Manu,
Minister for Health, he rescinded acceptance of the MAMA-HELP Inaugural Luncheon scheduled for February 12, 2018”
