Mental aptitudes, intelligence should be criteria for security recruitment – Manhyia North MP

Vice Chairman for the Interior and Defence Committee of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Collins Owusu Amankwah, has asked the security services to employ mental aptitude and intelligence as criteria for recruitment into the security services.

According to him the minimum height requirement for recruitment into the country’s security agencies should be scrapped.

He made this statement in an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive Tuesday.

The lawmaker, however, refuted earlier reports by some media outlets that the use of height as a requirement is discriminatory towards people from the Ashanti Region. According to him,  the  comments were not directed at any tribe.

He added that he only emphasized that height in this day and age has very little to do with the work of a security official as it has more to do with intelligence and brainwork than physique of the candidate.

Height has always been a requirement for recruitment into all security agencies in the country.

To be recruited into the Ghana Immigration Service the minimum height is 1.73 metres (5ft 8inch) and 1.63 metres (5ft 4inch) for Males and Females respectively.

One must be of a minimum height of 1.68m (5’6”) and 1.60m (5’ 4”) for males and females respectively in order to be recruited in the Ghana Armed Forces,

The Police Service is not an exception as applicants should be of 5 feet 8 inches [173cm] tall for males, and 5 feet 4 inches [163] for females to gain admission.
