Mahama’s murder: Arrest of Afoko’s accomplice will speed up trial – Family lawyer

Lawyer Anthony Anamu says the arrest of an accomplice in the death of Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama will speed up the trial process.

Asabke Alangdi, a suspect in the murder of former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama murder case has reportedly been arrested in Cote d’Ivoire.

The suspect, Asabke Alangdi who fled to escape prosecution as the second suspect in the murder of Adams Mahama was arrested by Ghana’s security agencies with the aid of Interpol on January, 25, 2019 after he was said to have moved from Burkina Faso to Ivory Coast.

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Minister of Information, who informed the media about the arrest said the arrest had necessitated the filing of a Nolle Prosequi in respect of the trial of Afoko, which had been adjourned till February 20, 2019, for his lawyers to address the Court.

 “Government assures all Ghanaians that it will not relent on any efforts to bring the perpetrators of crimes within this jurisdiction to book,” Mr. Oppong Nkrumah said.

Adams Mahama was attacked in front of his house at Bolgatanga with acid, on May 20, 2015, which led to his death in the hospital. Gregory Afoko was arrested following investigations.

Afoko has since been on trial at an Accra High Court, presided by Justice Lawrence L. Mensah (JA) sitting as an additional High Court Judge

 Speaking on Atinka FM “AM Drive  Tuesday,  lawyer Anthony Anamu explained that moments before his death, late Adams Mahama was able to identify his attackers, Afoko and Asabke, adding that as the lawyer for the family he had the obligation to find these two people and bring them to book.

He added that although the prosecution of Afoko was in session, the arrest of his accomplice makes them a pair.

“There are also witnesses at the drinking bar where the suspects allegedly sat to plan the attack and so we will start the case and complete it”, he added.
