KNUST: Otumfuor’s intervention in order, gov’t goofed- Occupy Ghana

Pressure group OccupyGhana has lauded Asantehene Otumfuor Osei Tutu’s intervention in the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology(KNUST) impasse.

The National Council for Tertiary Education last Monday asked the embattled KNUST Vice-Chancellor, Professor Obiri Danso, to step aside and hand over the administration of the University into the hands of the interim governing council.

Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson was asked to act in his stead.

However, the Vice Chancellor will be reinstated on a re-formed Governing Council on Friday. This decision is as a result of a meeting between the government and the Chancellor of KNUST, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as well and some stakeholders at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, spokesperson for Occupy Ghana, Kweku Segbefia stated that the dissolution of the KNUST Governing Council by the Education Ministry was illegal from the onset.

Kweku Segbefia added that neither the government nor any of its agencies, including the National Council for Tertiary Education had the mandate to either appoint or remove university authorities from office.

KNUST students led by the SRC embarked on a supposed peaceful demonstration on Monday against what they described as brutalities by the University authorities.

The peaceful demonstration, however, turned chaotic as some distressed demonstrators smashed louvres, billboards, windscreens of parked vehicles, as well as other University properties.

Eighteen students were arrested in connection with the issue and are currently assisting the police in their investigations.

Following the disturbances, there were initial calls by some persons for the VC to either be dismissed or resign.
