J. A. Kufuor turns 80 years today

Ghana’s former President, John Agyekum Kufuor is 80 years old today. Mr Kufuor now an was born on December 8, 1938 in Dabaah near Kumasi in the Ashanti region.

He was the seventh child of ten children of Nana Kwadwo Agyekum and Nana Ama Dapaah.

He attended the Government Boys Primary and Middle School in Kumasi before moving to Prempeh College from 1954 to 1958.

He is an Oxford-trained lawyer with years of experience.

On his return to the country, he served in various political positions before he eventually got the opportunity to lead the country in 2000.

Described by many as the best president in the fourth Republic, His Excellency John Agyekum Kufuor in his eight-year reign started the National Health Insurance Scheme to replace the then cash-and-carry system, the capitation grant for school children at the basic level, the Microfinance and small loans program (MASLOC), renovated the Accra Sports Stadium and the Baba Yara stadia as well as built the Essipong and Tamale stadia plus other achievements.

He is married to Theresa Kufuor and they are blessed with five children, Saah Kufuor, Owusu Afriyie Kufuor, Nana Ama Gyamfi, Agyekum Kufuor and J. Addo Kufuor.
