Health service delivery must be client-centered- First Lady

The First Lady, Rebecca Akufo Addo, has stated that health service delivery in the country must be client-centered.

She said clients must be empowered and be involved in their care, saying this approach promotes changes in both the way facilities are set up, and how health workers approach service delivery.

“It is against this backdrop that as part of my work with Rebecca Foundation and partners cut the sod for the construction of a modern pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital about two weeks ago,” Mrs. Akufo-Addo said.

She said it was her fervent hope that the facility will improve the working conditions of doctors and nurses and ultimately contribute to addressing the gap in equality of care and ensure improved healthcare for children.   

The first lady was speaking at the Child Health and Nutrition Conference 2018 organized by the Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Health under the theme “Strengthening Partnership for Achieving Universal Health Coverage in Reproductive Maternal, Child, Adolescent Health and Nutrition, held at the Holiday Inn hotel Accra.

Rebecca Akufo Addo also stated that investing in the nutrition and health of children and mothers is one of the best investment’s a country can make to enhance economic growth, eliminate poverty and reduce inequality.

According to her, child health and nutrition are core health concerns that contribute to a drastic and sustained reduction in the prevailing burden of maternal, newborn and childhood illnesses and death. 

She mentioned that the effective management of proven interventions and programmes will undoubtedly contribute a drastic and sustained reduction in the prevailing burden of maternal, newborn and child illnesses and deaths.

She said early childhood development is crucial to upholding the right of every child, not only to survive but be given needed environment and place in society to grow physically, emotionally and ensure optimal cognitive development.
