Headmistress charges GHC500 as admission fees at tuition-free basic school

Information reaching Atinka News indicates that authorities of Awudome One Basic School in the Okaikoi South constituency in the Greater Accra Region, are brazenly fleecing parents.

The headmistress of the government school, which is supposed to be free, is charging each parent GHC500 as admission fees for new entrants (JHS one students.

The headmistress of the school, Madam Bertha Agbudzor, declined to speak to the news team when we visited the school to seek her side of the story.

However, 10 parents who spoke to the news team said they were victims of the headmistress’ extortion.

They expressed shock at the development because they are aware that all government basic schools virtually pay nothing as tuition or administration fees.

According to them, attempts to seek clarification from madam Agbudzor have been unsuccessful because she is not ready to meet them.

They accused the headmistress of exhibiting some arrogant behaviors and needlessly repeating innocent students.

“I don’t understand that headmistress.. she is trying to repeat my daughter who  should be promoted to  JHS 3. She claims that my daughter doesn’t respect even though she had good grades. All efforts to talk to the headmistress have yielded no positive results,” one angry parent told Atinka News.

Another parent in a telephone interview with Atinka News said he was charged “GHC150 as levy, GHC30  for chairs, GHC245 for exercise and notebooks and GHC215 for textbooks only”.

The Deputy PRO for the Ghana Education Service, Isaac Asiedu Osei, said his outfit would investigate the allegations to ascertain the truth.
