Group promises to clear all plastic waste in Ghana within 3 years

A group calling itself 21st Century Initiative is promising that within 3 years Ghana will be free from plastic waste through the group’s concerted efforts to re-use plastic waste profitably.

The CEO of the group, Richmond Owusu Frimpong disclosed this in an interview with Abena Dufie Aboagye Tuesday on Atinka TV’s “Ghana Nie” adding that he formed the group as a result of the June 3rd disaster that claimed several lives.

He strongly believes that the disaster was caused by  scattered plastic wastes on the streets of Accra and its environs. He disclosed that he watched a young boy suffer death in that disaster of which he made a promise to help clear all plastic wastes from Ghana.

“In 36 months’ time, you may not see any plastic bottle or sachet rubber in Ghana here, not just Accra… pick my word…I have promised a dead child and so I’m fully committed to doing this”. He stressed.

As of now, the group comprises seven (7) members who have worked to turn plastic waste into rubber earrings, rubber pillows, flowers, etc.

He further indicated that work is in progress to provide waste bins at vantage points in the country to assist them in collecting plastic waste.

On a promise spree, the CEO of the group also promised that the group would provide flowers around the Kwame Nkrumah Circle interchange by the end of this year to help beautify the country’s capital and noted that they had already begun this project.

“We will provide flowers around the circle interchange area from now to the end of this year. Up to December, the Circle interchange area will be green,” he promised.
“When you go to Circle right now, we’ve provided some of the flowers… if the president wishes, he can go and have a glance at what we have done at the area.

He, however, called on the public and other stakeholders to help support the initiative noting that the group has sought help from the National Entrepreneurship Innovative Plan (NEIP) who are yet to respond to their call.
