Gollywood is a crime – KSM fires

One of Ghana’s celebrated satirist, Kwaku Sintim-Misa aka "KSM", has added his voice to other several critics of the new name for Ghana’s film industry, “Gollywood,” describing it  as criminal.

Last week, the adopted name for Ghana’ movies industry, “Gollywood”, was launched at the Ghana 60 Years on Film Summit which was held on July 12, 2018, at the Accra International Conference Centre.

For years, the name “Ghallywood” had been the name on the lips of virtually every Ghanaian including those in the creative arts industry, however, it came to light that the supposed Ghana Movie Industry name has been used as the name of a school called (Ghallywood Academy of Film Acting) founded by William Nana Owusu-Akuffo.

Reacting to the new name for the movie industry, KSM in a post on social media expressed shock and disgust at the new name, saying  it lacks originality and thus should be considered a crime.

Below is the full post from KSM:

“GHOLLYWOOD? This name should be considered a CRIME. How can you be in the CREATIVE arts industry and come up with a name that lacks ORIGINALITY. Creative people ORIGINATE they don’t IMITATE.”

There has been quite a number of debate about the new name. Several of these debates have been criticisms other than support for the new name.

Film producer and director, Leila Djansi has also had her say about the new name noting that she does not want her movies to be tagged as “Gollywood”.
