GJA, TUC join forces to solve mass media lay-offs

The  Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the Trade Union Congress of Ghana (TUC) have launched a collaborative effort to curtail the recent spate of mass lay offs that has hit the media landscape .

President  of the GJA ,Dr. Roland Affail Monney, disclosed this when he graced a   ceremony to graduate some pioneer  students  of the Atinka  Media Academy in Accra as a special Guest of honour.

Some media firms, GN Media, owned by Group Nduom and TV Africa which was recently taken over by Group Ideal, have in the last few days laid off some  staffs  in what has been described as a restructuring exercise, heightening concerns over the recent job as a similar incident followed the collapse of some banks. But the GJA  President  says the Association is in talks with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to help solve the tide  in the media. He noted that the GJA and the TUC will in the coming days  meet to deliberate on ways to manage the situation.

A total number of 48 trainees   graduated from the Atinka Media Academy (AMA) with 24 of them  obtaining  professional certificates in Broadcast Journalism, whilst  the rest obtained certificates in Camera handling and Video Editing among other media disciplines .

In his  welcome address , The Managing Director of the  Atinka Media Village,  Albert Kwabena Dwumfour ,charged the graduands to always be  guided by fairness and objectivity in the discharge of their duties.

He also  encouraged the graduands  to embrace the fact that nobody can succeed in life by not taking a shot at any opportunity that comes their way and as they embark their  journey into the future, they should take advantage of any opportunity they may come accross.

“As you pursue your various carers in different institutions, try to be worldly ambassadors with the practical experiences you acquired at Atinka Media Academy, He admonished the graduands .

He charged them  that, their  foremost duty as  would be media personnel is to be for  God,mankind  and Country  and not their  individual interests.

He also advised them to be guided by the code ethics of the Ghana Journalist Association.
