GJA to ensure safety of journalists following recent attacks-Atinka MD

The Organising Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has assured the public that the issue of assaults on journalists is addressed properly.
Over the years, many journalists have been assaulted during their line of duty by some security personnel and politicians who believed they had power and could take the law into their own hands.
Despite the many attacks on journalists, most of the perpetrators had gone free and unpunished, except with some few instances where justice was served in favour of the journalists.
The recent assault on journalists was the attack on the Ghanaian Times Journalists by some police officers, who were eventually interdicted .
However, speaking at the launch of the 70th Anniversary of the GJA, Mr Dwumfour, who is also the Managing Director of Atinka Media Village said that in the coming years, the GJA will deepen democracy and press freedom in the country, while it ensures that journalists are secured in their line of duty.
“Over the years, we have heard and seen attacks on journalists; but in the coming years, we will not see that again. Going beyond 70 years, there are a lot of things to be done by the GJA, and we believe that the years ahead will be more fruitful,” he said.
The Theme for the launch of the 70th Anniversary was; “Democracy, freedom and independence of the media in Ghana: 70 years of GJA’s contribution”.
Meanwhile, Mr Dwumfour also acknowledged Former President John Agyekum Kufour, who was also present at the event for providing an enabling environment for the media to operate. This, he said paved the way for the establishment of private media in the country.
