Ghana Inshore Fisheries Association throws support for Hawa Koomson

The Ghana Inshore Fisheries Association, one of the four bodies under the National Association of Fisheries Ghana (NAFAG), has thrown its weight behind the Minister Designate for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hawa Koomson, following her alleged abysmal performance before the vetting committee.

The Minister Designate whose performance at her vetting, has been described by many Ghanaians on social media as poor, is likely to face a hurdle in her approval for the position.

However, the Ghana Inshore Fisheries Association in a statement signed by its President, Joseph Armah Quaye, described such perception as flawed, noting that Hawa Koomson must be judged by her performance in her previous portfolio.

According to the Association, the Minister Designate can only achieve the desired target for the fishing sector if government gives her the necessary support.

The statement noted that, what the ministry needs now is to have its own research vessel to enable it determine when the fishes are spooning so as to protect the fingerlings.

The statement also called for the needed backing to be given to the minister if confirmed, to aid her revive the post harvest cold storage facility built in the erthshwhile Kufuor administration, which has turned into a white elephant.

“The association believes with the can do spirit exhibited by the Minister designate in her previous ministry, she’s best cut for the fishing sector and with a little support from the government, the fishing sector will once again be revived to meet the international best standard practice,” the Asociation added.
