Freight forwarders blast civil society over continuous silence on challenges affecting businesses

Some aggrieved freight forwarders at the Tema Port are accusing their leadership and civil society of turning a blind eye to the numerous challenges affecting their operations.

The aggrieved clearing agents who were speaking to the press in Tema on Wednesday, raised issues about the operations of the new port system coupled with increment in some charges as well as delays in doing business at the port.

Clad in their red armbands, Leader of the Group, Mawuli Ahiafor, stressed on their disappointment over failure of their leaders, known individuals and some civil society groups , who were very vocal during the erstwhile Mahama administration on matters relating to the port.

According to him, the growing silence on the untold hardship and challenges brought upon their businesses since the introduction of the new port system and some port charges, confirms their long standing suspicion that some of these vocal individuals have been influenced to keep mute.

He warned it would be suicidal for government to think that, the large silence on the part of freight forwarders with regards to happenings at the port, indicates that all is well.

Some aggrieved freight forwarders who also spoke to the media, raised concern about the introduction and increment in some charges, which they claimed were never discussed with stakeholders.

They cited increment in port security charge, which has been adjusted from 106 dollars to 245 dollars,  as well as some shipping lines setting their exchange rate at 5.95 as against the standard rate of 5.74
