#EndSARS:“Nigerian youth only resisting oppressors” – Activist

A Nigerian youth who is in support of the End Sars social movement, Chioma Oge, has refuted claims that the Nigerian activists “over doing” the protest.

According to her, the protesters are only fighting for their freedom after being oppressed by the SARS team for such a long time.

End Special Anti-Robbery Squad (End SARS) or #EndSARS is a decentralized social movement against police brutality in Nigeria.

The protesters are calling for an end to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a controversial unit of the Nigerian Police Force with a long record of abuses.

The protesters have shared both stories and video evidence of how members of SARS engaged in kidnapping, murder, theft, rape, torture, unlawful arrests, humiliation, unlawful detention, extrajudicial killings, and extortion in Nigeria.

Chioma Oge, who resides in Lagos state, in an interview with host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Ekourba Gyasi explained that the government had failed the youth of Nigeria and so a protest was the only option.

In a recent development, President of the Republic of Ghana,  Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for calm in the ongoing EndSARS protest in Nigeria.

Akufo-Addo, who doubles as the Chairman for the The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), in a tweet noted that violence , be it on the part of the Police or protesters, cannot be the solution to the act.

“I join all well-meaning persons in calling for calm, and the use of dialogue in resolving the #EndSARS impasse in Nigeria. I have spoken with President Buhari, who is committed to this end, and has begun the processes that will lead to reform. Violence, be it on the part of the Police or protesters, cannot be the solution. To the families who have lost their loved ones, I express my sincere condolences, and I wish the injured a speedy recovery,” Akufo-Addo said in a tweet on Wednesday 21st October 2020.
