Drivers clash with Police in demo over deplorable Hohoe roads

There’s a standoff between the Police and commercial driver unions in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region over a protest about the poor state of Hohoe town roads.
The unions on Friday blocked all lorry stations and roads in the municipality, bringing activities in the municipality to a standstill.
They say the state of the road is severely affecting their work.
Following a confrontation with Police in the area against the planned demonstration, the drivers have refused to work and prevented other drivers from working, leaving commuters stranded.

They also burnt lorry tyres in the process.

The drivers said their action will be intensified to draw the government’s attention to the situation.
The Police tried to calm down the protesting drivers, but they say they will not relent until they receive assurances that the problem will be addressed.

The Hohoe roads form part of the much-talked about Eastern Corridor roads.

The Eastern corridor road, which runs through the Municipality is in a terrible condition rendering the road barely motorable.
The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta while presenting the 2019 Budget Statement and Economic Policy before Parliament on Thursday, captured the Hohoe roads as part of major roads to receive attention in 2019.
Despite the mention, the drivers say they are not convinced because President Akufo-Addo promised to fix the roads earlier this year but has failed to honour his promise.
