Customs Division of GRA Introduces New Technology at Takoradi Port

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) is set to begin the piloting of the implementation of the new electronic customs clearance and information system at Takoradi Ports in the Western Region.
The exercise which is expected to commence on February 21, 2020, is an end-to-end supply chain solution that incorporates and consolidates existing systems currently in operation.
This was revealed at a media encounter to sensitize the media about the efficiency of the new technology which seeks to address all the challenges at the country’s ports.
The Ghana Revenue Authority in conjunction with its external private sector partners has embraced the introduction of a new customs management system at Ghana’s ports and frontiers.
According to GRA, Korea Customs was contracted by Ghana Link Network Services to introduce UNIPASS, a product of Korea Customs Business wing termed CUPIA that has developed a timer-tested Customs Business Solution which is known as UNIPASS.
UNIPASS, essentially is an electronic customs clearance which computerized customs procedures and provides for the automation of the clearance process, as a solution to overcome the increased volumes in trade and travelers given the limited resources available.
The UNIPASS is currently being operated in Africa, South American and Asian countries, including Korea and is composed of 77 modules with five subordinate systems: a Single Window (SW) system; a clearance management system; a cargo management system; an information management system; and an administration system.
The new port system which is replacing the GCNet and West Blue platform is believed to be more efficient, reliable simpler guarantees data security, user-friendly and capable of helping the state to check revenue leakages and enhance overall national revenue regime.
The Deputy Commissioner in Charge of Policy and Programmes at the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Felix Mate-Kodjo in an interview said the new system (UNIPASS) is more efficient and enhances the smooth facilitation and will also enable the superiors to be able to monitor the work of their subordinate.
The Assistant Commissioner of Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in Takoradi, Francis Talongo also in an interview expressed their readiness to ensure the piloting of the new system becomes successful.
