COVID-19 test should be made free- GMA to gov't

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) is calling for an urgent scale up of COVID-19 Testing and Contact Tracing for all positive cases as well as strict isolation and management of all infected persons to help break the chain of transmission.

Additionally, the GMA has suggested that COVID-19 testing should be made free or relatively cheaper for the ordinary Ghanaian who needs testing as a result of direct exposure or when symptomatic for COVID-19.

In a statement, the GMA also called for government led free mass testing in all identified COVID-19 hot spots.

“The GMA believes these will help address the current short falls in our testing and contact tracing regimes,” GMA stated.

The GMA again called on the law enforcement agencies to ensure compliance with the protocols at all levels.

“Adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be made available at all health facilities for use by the health professionals to curb COVID-19 infections amongst health care staff. There should also be continuous COVID-19 training and motivation for health workers. The need for these operational reviews in our current COVID-19 management strategy cannot be overemphasized,” GMA added.
