Covid-19: Health workers unions lament erratic supply of PPE's, others

 
 
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwifery Association (GRNMA), Health Services Workers Union of TUC Ghana (HSWU) and Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association (GHOSPA) have jointly called on government to ensure the regular provision of adequate PPE’s for all health workers at all time.
The 4 unions have argued that the lack of PPE’s in the health facilities have resulted in the surge in the number of covid-19 cases among health workers.
Since the outbreak of Coronavirus in Ghana, 779 health workers have tested positive with 9 deaths.
A large number of health workers are also in quarantine awaiting test results after being exposed to the virus at their various places of work.
Speaking to the issue on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Ekourba Gyasi, General Secretary for the GRNMA, David Tenkorang explained that health workers depend on PPEs and the shortage exposes health workers to the virus.
He added that the concealment of information from health workers by facility managers when health workers test positive poses as a threat to other health workers.
Asked how the unions can help government to address their concerns, David Tenkorang said the unions have made some recommendations to government which includes the transparent and adequate dissemination of information to exposed health workers whose colleagues have tested positive at the work place.
“Aside the regular provision of adequate PPEs to health workers at all time, we have also recommended that government through the security agencies ensure strict enforcement of all Covid-19 safety protocols without fear or favour”, he added.
