NEW VOTERS' ID: EC determined to ensure safety protocols at centres

The Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Bossman Asare, has stated that the  Commission will do whatever is proper to ensure that safety protocols are adhered to while compiling the new voters register to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
He  made the comments  at the National stakeholders’ Consultative Meeting organised by the Pentecost University College (PUC) at Alisa hotel.
Outlining some of the measures being put in place by the EC to prevent the spread of COVID-19 at registration centres, he said the EC will ensure that all eligible persons wear their face masks before entering the centres, adding that this will be mandatory.
He also said gun thermometres will be provided at the centers to ensure that all persons are screened before they can register.
For those whose temperature go beyond 38, he said health professionals, especially nurses will be available at the centres to take care of such people.
Dr Asare said veronica buckets will be provided to enable all person wash and sanitise their hands before participating in the exercise.
He said the equipment including scanners will also be sanitised frequently before allowing the next person to use.
“Limited number of persons will be allowed at the centre at a time,” he said.
Dr Asare also stated that despite the back and forth of compiling a new register, the EC has come up with a date and will be communicated to the public after engaging all political parties tomorrow (Wednesday).
He noted that the registration exercise which is likely to take about six days will start from 7 a.m each morning and end at 6p.m.
For those who do not have the Ghana Card, which is a basic requirement to register the new voters’ ID, he said they can produce a passport or get two persons who are able to register to vouch for them.
