National Women’s Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Hannah Louisa Bissiw says she will lead an “all women delegation” to have a dinner with the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo.
This follows comments made by President Akufo Addo at the 2019 Women Deliver Conference in Canada.
Speaking at the 2019 Women Deliver Conference’ in Canada the President said “We are not seeing enough dynamism and activism on the part of those who are seeking. I am talking about dynamism where it matters…electing people to Parliament, controlling political parties because they are the instruments by which our societies make decisions. We are talking about decisions, not wishes and hopes, we are talking about decisions that are going to make the difference”.
UN’s High Commissioner on Health Employment and Economic Growth who was a panel on the session, Dr Alaa Murabit, interrupted the President’s submission and charged him to “open the door” to women in Ghana.
Dr Alaa Murabit asked the President to look around him for more impactful, credible and dynamic women and “amplify” them to hold positions in his government.
“You know what, I think you and I need to have dinner”, Dr Alaa Murabit told Ghana’s President.
In an interview on Atinka FM’s morning show “AM Drive” with host Ekourba Gyasi, National Women’s Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Hannah Louisa Bissiw who described the comments as disgraceful promised to present rich credentials of competent women to the President over dinner.
“We will also go on a dinner date, buy food for President Akufo-Addo and afterwards present our rich CV’s and credentials to him for him to know that there are competent and dynamic women who are capable of taking decisions and not only making wishes. We will present to him women lawyers, engineers, professors, lecturers and Doctors etc. We will also ask him to present his credentials over dinner”, she said.
According to her, this will to a long way to affirm Dr Alaa Murabit’s assertion that there are competent women in Ghana who are capable of making decisions for government.
She noted that the President’s comment is capable of killing the spirit and soul of gender empowerment activism in Ghana.
